Fasteners above the nail line miss the underlying course entirely. The shingle is then held by its sealant strip alone and lifts in the first serious wind.

Overdriven or underdriven fasteners

Overdriven nails cut into the mat; underdriven ones hold the course proud and break the seal above. Both are compressor pressure problems, and both void wind ratings.

Missing starter course

Using a cut field shingle as a starter leaves no sealant strip at the eave and rake — the exact edges that see the most uplift.

Shingles on too shallow a pitch

Below the manufacturer's minimum slope, shingles cannot shed water reliably no matter how well they are installed.

Sealant strips that never bonded

Shingles installed in cold weather need warmth to seal. Where that never happened, the field stays loose and vulnerable.

Architectural versus three-tab

Three-tab shingles are flat, single-layer, and lighter. They were the standard for decades and remain the cheapest option, with a correspondingly shorter service life and lower wind resistance.

Architectural — or dimensional — shingles laminate two layers together. The extra mass gives better wind performance, a longer expected life, and a shadow line that reads far better on a house with any architectural detail. For the overwhelming majority of replacements in the county, architectural is the sensible default.

Premium designer shingles imitate slate or wood shake profiles at greater weight and cost. They suit specific homes; on a standard colonial they buy appearance rather than performance.

The layers under the shingles

Ice and water membrane at the eaves gives the roof edge a sealed surface where backed-up meltwater would otherwise be forced under the courses. It also belongs in the valleys and around every penetration.

Synthetic underlayment across the rest of the field replaces traditional felt. It is lighter, does not wrinkle when it gets damp, tears far less, and provides a safer walking surface during installation.

Drip edge at the eaves and rakes directs runoff into the gutter rather than behind the fascia. It is inexpensive, frequently omitted on older roofs, and responsible for a lot of rotted fascia board.

Wind resistance in practice

The wind rating printed on a shingle bundle is achieved under test conditions with a specific fastener pattern, a specific starter, and a sealed strip. Miss any of those on the actual roof and the number stops applying.

The edges do most of the failing. Uplift pressure concentrates along rakes, eaves and ridges, which is why a proper starter course on both the eave and the rake — with the sealant strip in the right orientation — matters more than anything happening in the middle of the roof.

Can shingles be installed in winter?

Yes, with adjustments. Shingles are more brittle in the cold and their sealant strips will not bond until temperatures rise, so vulnerable edges are hand-sealed and the field seals on the first warm days. The work is routine; it just needs handling differently from a summer install.

What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?

Standard installation generally requires 4:12 or steeper. Between 2:12 and 4:12 most manufacturers allow installation with a doubled underlayment and specific detailing. Below 2:12 shingles are not an appropriate covering and a membrane system should be used instead.
