Downspout count and placement matter more than most homeowners expect. Adding an outlet to a long run often resolves overflow that no amount of cleaning was going to fix.
The roof edge as an assembly
Drip edge, fascia, soffit and gutter work together. Drip edge carries water off the roof deck and over the front lip of the gutter; without it, surface tension pulls water back under the edge and into the fascia board.
Where fascia has already rotted, replacing the gutter alone puts new hardware on failing wood. The fascia gets repaired first, which is straightforward while the gutter is off and awkward once it is back up.
Soffit vents in that same assembly are the roof's intake ventilation. Keeping them clear matters to how the whole roof performs, and they are easy to inspect while gutter work is under way.
Where the water actually goes
A downspout that discharges at the base of a wall moves a roof-sized volume of water into the soil against the foundation. Extensions, splash blocks or a buried line carrying discharge away from the building are what turn drainage into something useful.
On tight lots — common across the county's older borough streets — discharge routing has to account for the neighbouring property as well. Solving a wet basement by sending the water next door is not solving it.

Are gutter guards worth it?
They reduce cleaning frequency rather than eliminating it, and performance varies widely between types. Under heavy oak and maple cover they help; fine debris and shingle granules still accumulate and the system still needs periodic checking.
How often should gutters be cleared?
